Way too general a question. What cancer surgery? If for colon/rectal cancer, sure a certain diet is recommended. For brain cancer, not so much. Skin cancer, not at all.

Actually any surgery. my grandmother had pancreatic cancer and my uncle had lung cancer, they were told to change their diets drastically by the doctor.

Default Pancreatic cancer

My husband has pancreatic cancer. No diet changes. He was told to eat what he could tolerate. The only problem is with MSG.

Default Diet

My husband was a 1B. He had the whipple surgery, radiation + 5fu and is now doing chemo with Gemzar.

He is on Creon to aid digestion. We were told to try to get back to normal as quickly as possible. After surgery, he could not tolerate spicy or fried foods. After keeping a log, we discovered the foods he could not tolerate contained MSG. We excluded MSG and there was no further problem.

It could be that their eating habits were terrible. And they needed to eat a healthier diet. This is true of a lot of folks....not just cancer patients.

And then, it could be that their doctor is a nut about eating certain things and not others.

My doctor did not ask me to change my diet, neither did my mom's when we had surgery for cancer. The nurse suggested I eat yogurt to help with potential stomach irritation while taking the antibiotics after surgery.

I wasn't on any special diets either. The only thing the doc said about food was when I was on chemo and told me to graze and not eat large meals. I was also told to eat something like prunes the day before, day of and day after chemo as chemo is constipating.
My diet changed on chemo. I felt like eating really junky foods but once I got off of it, my diet went back to normal. I like junk food but too much of it seems to bother me.
