Thanks so much. My husband knew his dad since he was 5 so it was sad to hear he died. Both families grew up together.

OP, my prayers are with the family!!
Neither a poa, power of attorney, or a living will survives after death. Check with your state and see if you have 5 wishes, that is a program where the person writes out exactly what their wishes are, check if this is available and utilized in your area. You actually have to have the DNR in your possession in many states if you call the ambulance to your home. There is a lot more legal red tape involved than most people are aware of. See a social worker if you have parents in a nursing home, to have these advance directives explained to you. A living will is only good if the individual is alive. It ends on their death. I had to turn folks away when I was a director of SS in a nursing home....There is a very broad misunderstanding of the authority given to relatives/friends of an ill person. You need a medical and a financial directive to make necessary decisions for a resident. Check on your state requirements, should be a web page related to advance directives for your region. It is never an easy discussion, but better to be prepared. Here is one link.
Download Your State's Advance Directives - CARING CONNECTIONS - NHPCO

Good advice. I had my mother's health care POA, a regular POA for her and I was her executrix. It was seamless.

Up until 6 months ago was doing ok. They also found a spot in his kidney last year but it was slow growng and they were watching it. well he took a turn for the worse 2 weeks ago, developed pneumonia, loss of appetite, taste and smell. They also said the cancer came back in the other lung and he was scheduled to start Chemo this week again. He was also supposed to get an MRI scan of his brain to see if the cancer spread there. Well yesterday I got the call that he was admitted to ICU on Friday in a hospital where he lives in Florida. My friend was already flying down this past Sunday to see him anyway and was glad he got there when he did.His parents have a plot in the Bronx NY but I don't know what arrangements will be made if and when he does pass. As of today's update, his father is suffering from a recurrence of lung cancer and is dying. He's in intensive care under sedation, due to respiratory distress. There is indication of cardiac problems too. Please pray for him. They said even if he makes it through this which is not likely the prognosis is not good. The way my friend made it sound was he would be lucky to last the week.
Lubby, the best we can hope for is to pray for guidance and pray for his comfort. You know the story is so much like a friend of ours, but his turned out on a positive note. His lung cancer was many years ago, caught very early, had just the tumor removed and he was fine. About 4 years ago they found cancer on his kidney. He had it removed, (the kidney) I think it might have been a liposarcoma like my husband has had. Anyway he did fine, developed another small cancer, it was removed 2 years ago and he is fine. The irranic thing, his wife, one of my best friends, died of lung cancer about 18 months ago and wasn't even diagonsed until 3 months before she died. Life isn't always fair, but I do believe God is there for us,
we just do not always like his plan. Good luck to your friend and to her dad.

Nita
