My wife just had her cancerous thyroid removed. She is going back for some radioactive Iodine treatment to make sure everything was removed. We are getting conflicting information on how long she has to stay away from us during her treatment (so that we don't get exposure). We are also unclear what she can and cannot touch as far as material objects. Does anyone have any advice.
I had the radioactive treatment for toxic multinidular goiter. As far as I remember, it was: stay at least 6 ft from people for 5 days; use disposible plates, cups, forks as it will all be contaminated; don't let pets lick you; keep toilet lid closed for 3 months as the iodine continues to be excreted. Only thyroid cells take up iodine which is why it is used.
I did the RAI for my thyroid a few years ago (mine was Hyper). I live alone, but was told to stay home and stay away from babies and elderly people. And to flush the toilet twice.
you should be very precautious after radioactive thyroid treatment, dont go outside stay at home, stay as far as away from people, drink lots of juices, water & shakes, dont share the things you are using with others keep you towels, bedsheets & clothes separate also wash them separately, use disposable utensils, wash the tub, wash basins and other things immediately after use.
