My bro is set up at a hospice place and the folks are really nice and it's a clean place... on Pueblo blvd way and south of Red Creek springs. One of our brother's is coming tonight from Georgia and the other one will come out Thursday from Florida. My wife is making food for my mom and dad... something easy to heat up and serve, some baked ziti.

I saw my bro today and watched gunsmoke with him. He is so skinny. He pretty much can't talk anymore either. He can move around really well though. If not for his lungs, he is/was in good shape physically.

I'm so glad you went to see him yesterday and got to see him before he died. Thoughts and prayers with you both.

My condolences as well, McGowdog.

My mother was paranoid schizophrenic, and she smoked like a chimney - four packs a day! Yes, she was a chain smoker, but I never would have connected that to the schizophrenia. She was diagnosed with lung cancer, and was operated on to remove one lobe of her lung. Of course, she kept smoking afterwards. It didn't help that she was also an alcoholic (another misguided attempt to manage the schizophrenia symptoms?). I have no doubt that she would have died of lung cancer within five years, probably even sooner than that.

This country, and my state (California) in particular, are terrible places to be mentally ill. There is no care for someone who needs to be in a locked facility for their own good, so their meds can be dispensed in a timely manner, etc. My mother wasn't really able to take care of herself towards the end of her life. It was very sad.
