This is more of a vent than anything. If nothing else, I hope someone here can learn from me.

My guy's family doctor will not sign a referral for him to go to U of M. I get it. I know it's all about the money. But it's also about a person's life. At every turn the health care associated with the current hospital has been sub-par. From his stay going from the emergency room all the way to billing. I continue to feel like I'm watching him die (and I guess in reality, I am).

U of M said that he A) has to find a family doctor that will refer him, B) find a U of M dr that takes new patients, C) just go to a U of M oncologist as an un-insured patient and pay $500 up front.

This is just incredible.

Since I am authorized to talk about his care, I plan on speaking to the dr in person. If he still refuses, I'll have to go around him. It will be tough, because its tough to get my guy to go to a dr anyway. But I won't go down without a fight, and it won't be pretty when I do.

I don't understand this....I thought you mentioned that he was told that he has cancer. I assume that information came from an oncologist. What were the results of his scans? Why would a family doctor have authority over his records once the patient is sent to an oncologist?

Exactly, this doesn't make sense.

If his doctor refuses to do a referral to an appropriate specialist than try calling the health insurance & tell them about the doctor's refusal to refer to a specialist.

Is there a patient representative or social worker at the hospital that can intervene?

His family dr told him he has cancer, and then referred him to an oncologist.

The way I understand it, the HMO requires his family dr to be the person that refers patients to specialists. So, to see an oncologist (or to change to another one), the family dr would be the guy to "sign off" for a referral.

The issue is, his family will only refer my guy to another oncologist within his affiliated hospital.

He is entitled to a second opinion. (I would think that there must be some ACA laws governing this now.) At any rate, I would keep pushing for it. Possibly one of these links has more information: Finding Health Care Services - National Cancer Institute

CA4Now:
Thank you for the links. I will look at each of them.

At this point, I made a call to the family dr to call personally (which is probably a crazy thought). I want him to explain his position. I am hoping that not signing is the "general" (bendable) rule that an office worker is enforcing, but that the dr will make exceptions for.

I want to thank each if you for your support.

Why is it necessary for him to go to U of M? Do you have any reason to believe that U of M will give superior care let alone a cure?
