Everyone knows that poor people are more at risk to developing cancer. Bad habits like smoking combined w/ little to no access to health care and a diet of cheap, fatty foods are the culprits. Well, it turns out it's not really that. What leads to this behavior is that poor people are at risk from not having a meaningful life w/ fulfilling activities and having few choices, which causes stress.

The article below is a real eye opener. I thought I was doing fine w/ a mostly vegan diet of fresh organic vegs, fruit and little wheat. I exercise by riding a bike or taking the bus, and have a Zen practice that focuses on awareness meditation to get me out of my head and into the present moment. But stress from this last election has had me eating cheeseburgers, fried chicken, and drinking. None of that is going to kill me because I put a stop to it after a short while, but the the stress that led to that was obviously still there. Most of it came from a feeling that I had no control over events.

So I sat down and looked at the things that I DID have control over, got busy on those, and let go of the things that I didn't have control over. It's day to day, but feels a lot better now. I'm back in control, at least of the important things.

Cancer happens whether you are rich or poor, healthy or not...it's a fact of our lives. A cheeseburger is NOT going to give you cancer....

This is so so true. The big "C" knows no boundaries . However..when it comes to diagnosis, treatment..the poor have a much less survival rate!! So it's obvious Survival Rate favours the affluent, and those who are lucky enough to have HC Insurance that actually covers cost that diagnosis it..and treatments. Far too many just cannot afford it..much less have Insurance Companies that will approve it without gouging you for their HUGE "Co-PAY"!!

Cancer too is genetic..and that too doesn't care about your station in life nor what Political Party you belong to..SO I guess if you want to look at which "Class" ( the poor being pointed out) suffers..I would have to agree!!

I agree to a point but where I live in the east end of Glasgow has the highest mortality rate in the UK, now alcohol , smoking of course seem to be the leaders, but the workplace in the east end with all the factories making carpets, bleach, househould cleaners, printers, gas works, coal mines etc from the past caused a lot of cancers so being poor and where we work can be the cancer cause too....

Exactly. However, I do agree that little or no access to medical care is certainly a factor in the treatment of cancer.

I believe, as many have said here, cancer happens, regardless of race, color, creed, finnancual level or anything else. Yes, enviornment plays a role as well, but the death rate from most diseases is higher among those who are uneducated or are poor. They either can not afford health care or do not realize the importance of regular check ups, etc. Generics play a role as well. As for life habits and eating or drinking, some carry it too far without realizing all the other factors that play into the development of many illnesses.

I don't think being educated or not, as well as being poor or not has anything to do with getting cancer. In my view the difference is in the person's genetics, but environment and diet must be taken into consideration.

Nobody knows the answers.
