It is unlikely that what you are describing is melanoma, so the answer is probably not. He probably has the squamous cell cancers that are common on sun-exposed skin.

I have had two Basal Cell Carcinoma's removed from my nose. Caused by sun exposure and sun burn.
My f-i-l who was a farmer had them on his ears and nose. Easy removal and recovery. My doctor said, "if you have to have cancer, this is the one you want to have." I have had no recurrence.

Squamous cell on the lips can be more serious than squamous sell in many other areas. When on the lips it's at a higher risk of spreading elsewhere in the body. Google for more info. But there are several different kind of skin cancers.

I have had several basal cell cancers removed and one squamous; the doctor said, in all cases it is unlikely the cancer will spread. Both are pretty much a result of time in the sun with little or no sun screen.

Oh no. I'm so sorry and I hope he can beat this. Seventy two isn't really that old anymore.

I just got the news of the loss of a CD friend (not from this forum.) Melanoma.
