I haven't read the other posts, but here is my experience.

I have had 2 colonoscopies. Rates vary considerably depending on what type of insurance you have versus no insurance. I had both procedures done at Cleveland Clinic Florida which is just down the street from me. Their rates are extremely high as I have come to learn.

Total price: Close to $5,000

Through a center:
Mamogram: $160
If your mother happens to be at risk you will want to get a more indepth scan.

Here is my recommendation. Call your local hospital or clinic where you are thinking of having this procedure done. Tell them you are "self pay" given that you have such a high deductable, you will be paying for this out of your pocket. Tell them you need to know the exact amount the procedure is going to cost. If they tell you they don't know - then insist or go elsewhere. There are a number of expenses involved in this - the procedure, test if anything is found (and this will be an unknown expense, but you can find out what the doctor and lab fee is beforehand), and the doctors report. Just be sure to confirm this with the hospital. Get a written quote. Insist on this. And shop around.

Does your mother have Medicare? You can also work with her immediate doctors on these things as well. You do have options. Please let me know if I can of further assistance. Health insurance and getting decent health care is such a daunting task.

I'm looking at my colonoscopy bill right now (of course it is covered by insurance) but the facility bill alone was $1,112. I expect another one from the GI specialist and the anesthesiologist here soon.

She lives in Texas if that matters. Thanks!

I can't afford any of those things. If I get sick, I'm going out into the woods.

Many colonoscopies yield a polyp or two one way or another. The claims people at work said hardly any colonoscopy comes back as a screening. Once they find something, whether they remove it or not, it stops being billed as a routine screening. In my case, they did find two, one of which was pre-cancerous. Woof, I seriously recommend you find the funds to do this somehow.

Oh yes. I agree. I've actually had 2 colonoscopies in the past 4 years. The first one was just because I was over 50 and "should" have one. They removed several polyps - never had any symptoms.

Because of those polyps, they said I needed a repeat one in 3 years so that was my 2nd one. A couple of polyps again this time. So the next one will be in 3 years again.

I don't mind the colonoscopy but the prepping........yuck! I hope they come up with easier ways by my next time.

I hear ya, vpcats! They now changed my return appointment to 3 years. Like you, I'm hoping the prep protocol is easier than the water boarding with Osmoprep entails. I guess, once they find polyps once, they have to do it more frequently. With colon cancer in my mom's family, I am already at risk.
