Hi I'm, a relative moved in with us about three months ago. Their car registration just recently passed in the previous state they lived in, 2 months ago.

They made an appointment to obtain their license and vehicle registration. They were only able to secure an appointment two months from now and that will put them at close to 90 days with an expired registration.

Should they renew their registration in the previous state while they wait for their appointment?

Appreciate any insight into the issue.

Interesting problem. Here you are required to get licensed (driver and car) within 30 days of moving in. You can't do that if there is a two-month wait for an appointment. I would suggest that they keep a copy of the appointment date in writing in the car at all times, if still ticketed they could use that to fight it in court. Since the fine here is $529, I would weigh that against the cost of renewing in the old state. Your state's regulations and fine are probably available on the DOL/DMV website.

Do you mind sharing what states are involved? Might help the replies

Tough situation.

Personally, I'd renew the registration in the old state. This buys you a year to figure out the new state. Driving without expired registration can lead to a number of other issues, depending on how strict the new state, or officer is.

Your thread title says insurance, but the post asks about registration. Is insurance an issue?

Several (most ?) States have extended their "grace periods" for such applications and renewals due to their offices being closed and/or backlogged.

Check the new States DMV website for any information.

Also see if your relative can get temporary tags.

Good point. I’ll be interested in the OP’s comments re insurance.

We just moved. I’ve been waiting to get the title for our new truck simple because the new state will cost way less than the old state. The sooner I can get it registered, the sooner I can get a refund from the old state.

Insurance, at least for me, wasn’t an issue. My provider cut our rate by $200 every six months so I did that while we were in the middle of our move.

Be careful about reregistering in old state. It's insurance fraud in many states if you lie as to where you park or garage your car every night. If you get into an accident in the new state the insurance company might question a little harder as to the validity of your claim and application/never updated information.

I can't believe the registration is 2 months out. I did a change of address snail mail recently during the virus and I got return paperwork a little over 2 weeks later. I printed the form and mailed as instructed. Yes some states always slow.
