well after an emailing blast and also letter in the paper, we are finally making headway on getting help for my mil. We were told verbally today that the health services can have a helper come into my mil three times a day for 30 mins each to make sure she takes her meds and eats. She has been on this waiting list for 6 months and is not considered a priority case. She is a heart patient and a dementia patient and has no family at all in Ireland taking care of her.
Also tomorrow her GP and the head geriatrician are making a HOUSE CALL to assess her needs at home. Yesterday a social worker came to her along with the public health nurse. The public health nurses have been fantastic and really have been going to bat for her as they know she is a crisis patient.
Congratulations. This should take a lot of stress and worry from your shoulders. Since your MIL had not been letting the previous home health aides in, perhaps you could consider putting a lockbox on the house so they can let themselves in?
Would love to give them a key, however, my mil leaves the key in the inside of the door so there is no way anyone can open the door from the outside. She has done that several times even when we visit and we usually need to call her on the on the phone to get her to open the door. Recently when my dh was there, he waited outside in the car after a red eye flight for two hours to get her to open the door even though he had a key and she knew he was coming.
They call her on the telephone if she dosnt answer the doorbell. It is a very frustrating situation for all involved as she is holding all the cards for her own care and dosnt seem to realize it.
