Same with my dad. A stroke took half of his life at age 56. Another ended it 9 years later. He knew he had cardiovascular issues a year before his big stroke but refused to quit the smoking. Terrible habit.

As for your Stepmother, it's too soon to move her along unless she suggests it. I'm sorry for your loss.
