We heat our house in the winter with a wood stove. We had 2 cats when we put it in in the winter 11 years ago. We never 'taught' them not to go on it. They seemed to just know.
The problem now, I have 2 new kitties and since we haven't needed to use the stove yet they have been jumping up on it. I'm really worried about them getting burnt when we do start to use it. Any ideas on how to teach them not to jump on it?
Put a shallow pan of water on the stove. Preferably a pan that covers the whole area. Or two pans if needed. Cookie sheets, for instance.
When they jump up they will get wet. They may even pull the pans of water down on top of themselves. You can get those aluminum throwaway cookie sheets for safety, so they won't get hurt if they pull the pans down.
It will be messy, but worth saving their little paws from being burnt.
They will soon learn that this is not a nice place to jump.
But leave the pans up there until you start using the stove, just to be sure they stop.
Heck, leave the pans on the stove all winter long. Good for adding humidity.
