One of my dearest friends (though she was crazy as a dodo bird) had passed away. Her estranged daughter called to tell me.
CW, the unofficial nickname given to her by my husband loved animals more than people.
She took in cats with no homes (often times pregnant), dogs no one wanted (including a pitt that had been abused), and 2 horses that had nearly been starved to death.
She worked as an animal cruelty investigator and cried every night in bed. She mourned her own pets death as though it were a human, and never quite got over her dear dakota (a ****z zhu) who passed away from kidney and diabetes problems little over a year or so before her own death.
CW was not without her faults, but she never met an animal she didnt love, and would do anything in her power to help those who no one cared for.
She was my closest friend, and (usually) there for me when I needed her. Her family said she died from an athsma attack, although I firmly believe she took her own life. They are Jewish and do not believe in autopsies. She had severe depression and little to no coping skills. Shortly before Christmas, she told me not to call her- that she didnt want to talk- and that she would call me when she felt like talking. So when my phone rang january 13th (the day before my own birthday) and it was her number- i answered with a cheerful and typical smart a$$ comment. only it wasnt her.
So tonight, I raise a glass of wine to her. TO CW- animal lover and protector, friend and advocate. I hope she has found the peace that so eluded her in life, adn that she is with her beloved dakota, and her father, and all of her other fur babies she lost over the years.
I will also raise a glass to toast such a sensitive and kind soul...I'm sure she's with her beloved Dakota now, guiding animals in need toward the people here on earth who will help them.
RIP CW...your heart lives on in all who rescue the sick, sad, and abandoned animals of this world...
I agree. I will raise a glass to CW. Those who look after unwanted animals are tops in my book.
