I always thought that shiney silvery colour on cats was called "blue", even if the cat is not a pure breed. But now a friend told me that there are certain conditions of a cat's coat and colouring to be considered a "blue". So as google failed me, I thought maybe you guys could help:
- what makes a cat's colouring "blue"?
- Are Russian Blue and British Blue just breeds of cats, or is it a colouring?

you are correct, coat condition and breed play no part in that "blue"
"blue" actually referes to all grey colored cats, from light grey to smoke, to that deep slate blue, they are all officially in the "blue scale" when it comes to genetics.
i think it started because blue sounds better than grey and is more descriptive of an overall color range.

russian blue and british blues are different breeds, the shade of blue however can also vary between the 2 breeds.

We had a blue point siamese, he was cream and grey. When he got older, he was mostly grey, and darker grey.

yup you can call your greys "blue"

as far as im aware the only "greys" that arnt refered to as "blue" are silvers in bengals and smokes in persian/himalayans, which are both much lighter "brighter" grey than is commonly refered to as "blue"

That is interesting! I have had colour changes happening to my fish, but never my cats (never had a pure breed though).

Yes. Your 'gray' cats are blue. And if you have any red cats, they are RED. not orange. It matters not the shade. There is no such thing as an orange cat.

Of course they are special, ALL cats are special.

I dont have any 'red' cats currently. Claudia was red (i guess??? tannish-though we always called her blonde LOL), she passed away this past spring at age 17 The year before we lost Janie (who was 15 and a tortie). losing 2 babies in 2 years was tough. both were 'gifts' from my hubby when i was in high school.
