I was just wondering about that. When I go into my room and tell KK that I am going to feed him come on lets go get some lunch, he does it.
This morning after I went back to sleep early in the morning after my bf left I got up and said, "Come on KK, lets go back to bed," and he is following behind me!
Of course he is an absolute great kitty, but I don't think he knows he is a kitty!
They come if they know it's for something they want to do, like for playtime or mealtime. Otherwise no. And Mickey will go under or behind furniture if I call him for no apparent (to him) reason. He's very loving but also has the most suspicious mind of the three of them. Probably because he's had more traumatic experiences at my hands, like ear drops, baths (he had to have 3 of them as a kitten, while the other cats have never had any) and probably other things that I've forgotten but he hasn't.
80% of the time, if I call him, my cat will come to me.
100% of the time, regardless of whether I call him or not, he will follow me from room to room. Within about 10 minutes of me leaving any room, he will follow me to the room I am at. He seems to need to have me in his line of sight at all times. He waits outside the bathroom door while I am in the shower.
100% of the time he will come if I say "treat" and about 80% of the time if I say "turkey" or "who wants a kitty breakfast?" in an animated voice
Well KK was just sitting next to me with his front paws sitting on my lap and me petting him and I am listening to music and started whistling and he started meowing at me.... Well that was just so cute....
Oh yes, the more time you spend with your cat and communicate with him/her you will find that they communicate back to you and will come to you if you call them! Meow!

Most of mine know their names and will perk up or turn toward me if called but won't necessarily come unless they know they are getting something they want. The senior will hop off the couch and come upstairs to bed when I say "you ready for bed?" and the younger ones are really good about coming when they are called if they know they are getting treats or food. Last night I cut everyone's nails and after each round, I'd say to the cat who just got clipped "OK come on, let's go get treats!"... they sure know what that means :P
