That headline generalized too much, once you read the article you'll see:
"...Professor Daniel Mills, professor of Veterinary Behavioral Medicine at the University of Lincoln in England, believes that receiving the undivided attention of a human seems to freak out cats living alone."
Prof Mills never met Weasie.
Nor has he yet seen what goes on when Seteria so much as walks in while I'm petting her mother, Blaliko. A mild reaction on the part of the latter is to storm out of sight with ears folded back. More often she dishes out words, hisses, and growls over having had her quality time encroached upon before making her dramatic exit.

I mean, in a sense the article is and isn't correct. A cat living alone that does not like human interaction wouldn't be as happy, but a cat who loves human interaction would be happy. The correlation does not make sense, and only works if the cat is a cat that doesn't like it.

I think this is a problem with the news reporting and less with the actual study.

I've always tried to have more than one cat because of this. But my calico has always been a loner. She didn't like the other cat when I brought her home, picked on her and was so happy when she died. Then I brought another cat in and she hated the baby kitty. Wouldn't snuggle at all and fights with her all the time. I thought it would get better but it doesn't. The older the calico gets the worse she fights. Oh well.
