I know I have mentioned it somewhere before, but my Charlie is afraid of the stairs. We have had him since he was 8 weeks old and now he is a bit over 7 months old. He will not go down the stairs to the basement. If he gets down there he will walk around but stay away from the stairs.

If he is upstairs he will sit on the second step, and will go no further. I mentioned not really believing the things the lady said about he and his siblings when she had them. She also mentioned that they would go up and down the stairs all the time.

If I had to compare a lot of what she says to Charlie's behavior, I would have to say she is lying.

Kitty Katty and I were chilling on the recliner this morning and I noticed there was no Charlie. I looked around the house for him and he was no where. I heard a little meow. (he is not much of a talker) I looked down the basement stairs and there he was. He wouldn't come up. Not for food and not for treats.

I think he must have fallen down. He tears around the corner to where the stairs are and I bet he fell. I went down and picked him up and as I walked towards the stairs he started scratching and flailing all over the place. It got worse the closer I got to the stairs. He kept it up until I got up the stairs and around the corner in the kitchen.

He has a severe fear of the stairs. He doesn't have a problem with jumping and climbing. I know there were teenagers at his foster house. I have to wonder if they tossed the kittens down the stairs or something. I have never seen a cat so afraid of stairs in my life.

Does anyone else have a cat afraid of the stairs?

Our cats love the stairs and zoom up and down them! It's actually scary sometimes when we are climbing them and they zoom by.

When Sadie was a tiny tot, she did not understand them but quickly figured them out.

Poor Charlie. I have 4 cats and they have no fear of the stairs.

You might be on to something about his foster home. Maybe something traumatic did happen with the stairs. Is there any way you can contact the foster home and just casually bring up his fear of the stairs? They probably won't admit to anything but it's worth a shot.

I see the people from the rescue probably at least 3 Sundays a month, and sometimes his foster mom is there. I am certainly going to bring it up next time.

I really don't think she is truthful about it though. She never saw Charlies balance issues and said they went up and down the stairs all the time.

I have a feeling they were really just caged for the most part. They also had a few teenagers, and I really am wondering if they tried to see if Charlie could fly. He is really deathly afraid of the stairs.

Poor little Charlie.

All of my cats have loved the stairs, unfortunately. One caused me to break my ankle - the little stinker!

I had an open staircase with each step fully carpeted on both sides. They looked at it as one big cat tree. They'd dig their back claws into the carpet and "spin" themselves around each step. I had to vacuum both sides of each step.

Hated that staircase!

Poor Charlie. I wonder if there's some way you could help him overcome his fear, poor little thing. Maybe if you sat on the bottom of the basement stairs and petted him, gave him treats, gradually encouraged him to go up a step or two? Wish I could help.

Whisper into KittyKatty's ear that he needs to be a big brother here!

My cats use the stairs as a racetrack. Especially when I'm using them, too ... They also view the stairs as giant scratching posts. *sigh*

My cat is too. Although, it might have something to do with the 85 pound pyreeness is just waiting to show it who's boss. Could be me but, I think that is the reason. Maybe I should look into it.

My Sushi loves to race up and down the stairs. It sounds like a herd of stampeding wildebeest. That being said, there`s usually a reason behind the fear. My old CouCous was terrified of men and their shoes. It doesn`t take a PhD to figure out he was kicked around some before we found him.
