There was never this much of a problem when we wrote letters, read newspapers, paid bills by check, etc.
I had no idea that was even possible, and don't know how you managed that. Around my house, anything involving paper on a flat surface is guaranteed to have some sort of feline participation. More than a few times I've had to resort to reading my newspaper in my office (aka the bathroom).

Yep. I pay my bills by check and write out cards, etc, and I always have either a supervisor or a little bit of company!

oh no, not in this house.
My cat won't let me read a newspaper. He insists on stretching out right on top of it and purring and pawing me, and acting all loveable and cutesy so I pay attention to him and not the newspaper.
and we're not allowed to write out checks, and my grandson's not allowed to do his homework unless the cat is locked out of the room, or he jumps on the table and deliberately knocks any pens right off the table onto the floor and then he'll plop himself right down on top of any papers and refuse to move.
I tell people I own cats, but it's really the other way around.
Nimbus used to bug me when I was on my computer (he used to sit next to the monitor and try to swat the moving mouse cursor on the screen.) But then we put a window perch thing (the one with the giant suction cups) up about 2 feet away...now if he's wanting to be near me while I'm on my computer, he either hangs out in that, or if he's feeling like mischief he'll stalk my toes.
Of course my desk also got so cluttered, he can't move around on it easily...nowhere to put his feet...and it's a rolltop so he's not knocking stuff off.
The best course of action is usually to stop asking the question and embrace the acceptance of one of the immutable laws of the universe, which is that if it is physically conceivable, a cat will do what a cat wants to do!
[The same pretty much holds true for squirrels, too]
