I used a comb only and the one w/ rougher hair hated it, but the one w/ fine hair liked it! I just went slow and told them they were gonna get combed, regardless of their "attitudes." I could cut my cat's nails, too, without a problem. Maybe the nurse in me. They could be disgruntled about it, but I always had a matter of fact way about everything I did w/ them and they freaked much less.
I use a slicker. I've had only one long-hair, the rest all short-hair and they have all loved this thing. It's cheap ($10), lasts forever, you can buy it at any pet shop and I think even Walmart carries them.
