Unfortunately, to some people any creature that is not human is an 'it'.

As for the linked story, there's not many details to know for sure, but I suspect it may be a case of 2 'clueless about cats' humans that probably shouldn't have a cat. Having said that, that other similar episode last year about a cat attacking her human family that Jackson Galaxy got involved with, turned out the cat had a neurological condition that needed treatment & they ended up finding her a different home. Could be a similar situation here.
