I think she had had food allergies, which showed up as allergens, in her fur, dander, saliva? and that I had a reaction to her, because of the side effects of her improper diet.
Would other people would have a lessening of symptoms? I don't know. But, based on my experience, it seems entirely possible considering many/most cats are now fed dry kibble.
We have both dogs and a cat, when our allergic to pet friends come over they take Zyrtec before. Taking it after already being here doesn't work, they take it a few hours before and don't have any trouble.

I'm allergic to my cats. I vacuum every other day, and use the vacuum to dust everything. I even vacuum my bedding.
My OTC drugs of choice are Allegra and Benadryl.
Aside from vacuuming like a fiend two or three times before your friend arrives, the best thing you can do is to keep the cat out of the room where your friend will be staying.
