I have a 3 month old kitten, Matilda. A friend of mine may visit in a few months, but he is pretty allergic to cats.

Has anyone had success using HEPA filters to help curb cat allergies? How about OTC medications?

I know there are shots one can get but I'd hate to have to ask him to resort to that if there's another solution.

I'm allergic to cats..........and I've had cats for 50 years.

Zyrtec, Flonase and allergy eyedrops works for me.

I also brush/comb the furkids every other day and vacuum after.

Pardon my ignorance: are Zyrtec and Flonase OTC? (I know at one point, they were RX only)

I'm very diligent about vacuuming, as well as combing her.

I'd keep the kitten out of the room (or at the very least, the bed) where your guest might stay, if you can.

DH has cat allergies and has found a Honeywell air purifier helpful. We have that in our living room.

After I adopted Olivia,I realized I was having allergy symptoms whenever I got up close to her.

When I adopted her, she scratched, a lot.

I had two other cats at the time and did not have any symptoms around them.

Long story short, when I transitioned Olivia off of kibble, and began feeding her the same as my other cats ... canned food or raw, no grain, very little carbs, -high quality, ANIMAL SOURCED protein ... Feeding Your Cat: Know the Basics of Feline Nutrition :: healthy cat diet, making cat food, litter box, cat food, cat nutrition, cat urinary tract health She began scratching less and less, her fur became soft and plush.

I think she had had food allergies, which showed up as allergens, in her fur, dander, saliva? and that I had a reaction to her, because of the side effects of her improper diet.

Would other people would have a lessening of symptoms? I don't know. But, based on my experience, it seems entirely possible considering many/most cats are now fed dry kibble.

We have both dogs and a cat, when our allergic to pet friends come over they take Zyrtec before. Taking it after already being here doesn't work, they take it a few hours before and don't have any trouble.

We aren't super diligent about the hair either. (i.e I don't vacuum daily and we don't use hepa filters)

I'm allergic to my cats. I vacuum every other day, and use the vacuum to dust everything. I even vacuum my bedding.

My OTC drugs of choice are Allegra and Benadryl.

Aside from vacuuming like a fiend two or three times before your friend arrives, the best thing you can do is to keep the cat out of the room where your friend will be staying.
