What do you use? A plain water bowl, or a fountain? Which works best for your kitties and you?

I have one kitty who likes to drink from the kitchen faucet but she is getting too old to jump up onto the counter, and also I would prefer she drink from a bowl so that when I am not home I will know she is not going thirsty. She also drinks out of the toilet occasionally. She used to drink from the shower, but hasn't done that in a couple of years.

The automatic waterers/fountains I have looked at online are all very expensive, and look like they would be a pain to clean. As well, I would rather change the water in a bowl myself than have water circulating and recirculating through a fountain. But I think my kitty "might" prefer the fountain.

What do you use?

I use a bowl now - one shared water bowl for my dog and 2 cats.

I had a fountain for a cat I had years ago. My current kitties are TERRIFIED of it. For the longest time, they even refused to enter the room where it had been.

We have a bowl (but we also feed canned and raw food, so our kitties drink little from the bowl).

I have a friend who bought a nice fountain from etsy for way less money than ones sold in pet stores. It's porcelain and very attractive. Something to consider. It sounds like your girl would like a fountain.

I have both. The fountain is better. They like it better. They are not hard to clean, but the filters do need periodic replacement.

I use the Original Drinkwell which never breaks, but the mineral deposits can't be cleaned off the rim and it starts to get icky after a few months.

You won't have that issue with the ceramic ones, but I am not sure they will hold up as well, and they are much more expensive than the OD.

In my extensive study series involving 1 cat I have to say she loves the fountain (when she can't get us to turn on the kitchen tap for her). She WILL drink from a bowl but clearly prefers the fountain. It did take her about 2 days to warm up to it when we first brought it home though.

You can clean the mineral deposits off with Lime-Away or vinegar.

I have three Drinkwells and rotate them. They get changed when the cats have used two 50 oz. reservoirs. They can be cleaned in the dishwasher without removing the pump motor. (I have the older ones.)

I also have a watering dish with a reservoir from Wal-mart. But just for fun I also give them a dish of ice cubes every day. The very cold water seems to be to their liking.

I can put a Drinkwell down, with the 50 oz. reservoir and know the cats will have water for 4-5 minimum. My 14 yo tom like to tip regular water bowls, so that option is more limited.
