Generally, we don't give our cats any people food. . .but now that Benny is 18.5, he has started to take an interest in some foods. I let him have a small bite (assuming it's safe for kitties). At his age, a lick or butter or tidbit of muffin won't hurt him.
That is my logic too. When a kitty gets old, let them enjoy whatever makes them happy. During Chewys last days, he loved to sit by me while I was eating dinner (again, I am a soft touch) and we would share our dinner together. It was something he really enjoyed, and I am glad I let him have that enjoyment before he passed.
My present cat insists in smelling what I'm eating. The only thing she wants of mine is a a tablespoon of ice cream, the left over milk from a bowl of plain breakfast cereal(no banana juice!!!) roasted chicken and I always save some tuna before I mix in mayo.
One of my owners is not food motivated, but the other owner runs from the other end of the house if I pick up the cheese. A little nibble and he satisfied so it doesn't spoil his dinner.
Maybe I worry too much. I haven't given my cat any people food at all in the 3 years I've had her. I think about her being genetically an obligate carnivore and don't want to take the chance she'll feel sick or get diarrhea. She's not a youngster in her mid teens.
I was just the opposite with my dogs. They are omnivorous for the most part and I would always share a little bit of food with them. Sometimes they would even go with me to a drive through and share a burger or egg McMuffin. I miss doing that.

With some exceptions (like chocolate), I think sharing a small morsel of what you're eating is ok. Emphasis is on very small amounts, and not on a regular basis.
But her mother Blaliko gets "all up in my face" when my hand's in a bag of snacks. Why? She loves to lick the salt from my fingers
My female cat loves salty snacks. She'll steal Goldfish from a bowl and munch on them; sometimes I'll leave her the crumbs from the bottom of the bag.
My male cat investigates everything he sees me eating. He prefers ham, turkey, cheese, or plain yogurt, but will settle for salty snacks if he's looking for attention.

Well, he went to all that trouble to steal the egg - why shouldn't he defend it? LOL

ShadowCat will tackle you over Doritos - Jacked only! ChaCha does not object to some poached and chopped chicken or a bit of cream cheese. Izzi & Bizzi are finicky eaters to start with and people food is not on the list.
