For over a year my cat has had an eye problem.

Randomly, out of no where, his left eye will be 1/2 closed and have extreme watering. At first I thought he was damaging it but I put everything away that could cause damage.

I think now it is a blocked tear duct as it seems to happen after sleep.

I know, take him to the vet right?

1. I cannot. My cat is crazy fractious at the vet as usually hurts himself and my vet.
2. My cat is 14 and my vet basically told me last time she wouldn't treat him anymore out of damage to her crew and my own cat (he has ripped out several nails and it causes walking problems).
3. We have tried EVERYTHING. Even at home which do not seem to work to put him down. He seem able to over come any drug in moments of fear.
4. I have looked up the solution to this and it is very expensive but also, may not work at all.

Some have suggested it is an allergy and it does seem worse after fish but it seem odd to have an allergy in one eye.

I think I am going to just have to let it happen. It seems to resolve after a few hours but has been happening more frequently.

Anyone have any at home suggestions?

Have you considered calling an animal eye specialist to get their opinion? IMO regular vets have limited knowledge about the eyeball. Our Benny has seen a specialist for most of his life (and he's 19). The test they do for a blocked tear duct is pretty simple.

Let me start by saying that our Benny needs to be sedated when he visits the regular vet but NOT the specialist. He learned quickly that the eye place is different and doesn't do "vet stuff" like blood draws.

Wondering if you've tried gabapentin for sedation? It's really been helpful for us, as our guy has a heart condition and stress is bad for an old guy.

Just some thoughts.

Yes. It has been tried, at scary high amounts and my unconscious cat woke up and fought to the death the moment the vets arrived at home. The vet feels they can't go any higher.

It is my experience that that vets will not talk to you unless you pay them for a visit. The only reason my vet is still talking to me is she is trying to convince me to have the cat put down as there is no realistic option for any sort of care that does not involve the initial struggle to put him out where the cat hurts himself each time.

You can find another vet and ask if they'll do a phone consultation. You probably won't get much out of someone who wants the cat put down, but I've had a phone consultation where they send the relevant records and you can take a picture of his eye (I assume) and send it and the vet will look things over and call you at a set time and tell you whatever. It was the same cost as an office visit and in our case the vet said they would waive the next in-office exam fee if/when we came in.

I doubt you'll be going in, so you may just have to live with the eye issue if it's not painful and won't be a big problem for him. He's old, and we all get stuff that we just put up with as we age.

Like NYC said, you could try to find another vet who might do a phone or video consult instead. Can you get video of his eye while it's weeping?

Or in my earlier post, call an eye specialist and get an opinion. Of course I'd expect that you'd pay for these services but you wouldn't have to bring him in.

Already did that. They were very dismissive but to be fair it is very hard to figure anything out from a photo or video.

I also feel like if something comes up more serious in the future I could get it addressed then.

You called the regular vet? The one who said to put him down? Or someone else who might be more open to it considering his age, general condition, and level of terror at the vet?
