I'm needing a few tips in searching for a good pet sitter.
We have been using the same person for the past couple years but we're concerned that she doesn't have a back up in case of emergency. What happens to our pets if she has an accident or otherwise can't get here to feed our cats?
Besides having a reliable back up, what should we be looking for in a good pet sitter? Are chains better or individuals? Are they routinely insured?

If you are satisfied with the sitter you have now, why not keep her and work on finding a back up for her, whom she could call if needed? That way you retain control on who exactly would be coming into your home when she couldn't come. I'd feel strange about the possibility of an unknown person coming in, if she couldn't make it for some reason. Just a thought.
Our pet sitter came highly recommended by our groomer. She is wonderful...she knows that in case of an emergency, our next door neighbors have a key to our house and can "pinch hit".
If you have a good relationship with your vet and you trust them...many vet techs do housesitting and pet sitting. I always like the idea have them having medical knowledge in case of a real emergency.

I wish I could provide a back up but have no one reliable enough.
I'm mainly considering professional services that have a network of sitters that work as a team and would provide guaranteed service in case your regular sitter has an unforeseen emergency.

Our petsitter is also our neighbor who has her own business. While she does have several employees, she also uses her next-door neighbor to help out in an emergency. I think it is the petsitters job to find backup, so ask yours if she has someone. If not, then you will have to take care of that. I agree that vet techs are good to use and many pet and housesit. The only thing to be careful about is another person having access to your home. One problem we had with the "neighbor" helping out is not locking our doors. Also, our petsitter and any of her helpers always leave a note for me every day in a notebook that I provide so that I know what they did while they were with our pets. We have an on-going written dialog so that they know if there is a problem and so do I.
