I'm not out, so I've got time to consider what insulin to use. Hi, newbie here and first post.

Our female, dsh, cat named Tahoe is about 8 years-old. She was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes shortly after we rescued her from a shelter as a small and very pregnant cat. She was spayed before the kittens were delivered. I hope that doesn't shock you, but I believe preventing the birth of kittens is the single most humane thing people can do to prevent suffering in the cat population.

Tahoe was put first on a human insulin, I think from Lily, but I don't remember. It was discontinued and we discovered vetsulin at that time and Tahoe has been on that insulin for probably 5 years. It's been working fine.

BTW, with the Lily insulin I had been using u100 syringes intended for human use. When I switched to vetsulin and u40 veterinary syringes I (and Tahoe) noticed they weren't as good. Where the human syringes pierced the skin smoothly and with little notice, if any, from Tahoe, I could feel the veterinary syringes tear through the skin instead of piercing it. Tahoe felt it to.

With my vet's advice, I went back to Reli-On u100 syringes from Walmart. They are u100 syringes. To get the correct dose, I would multiply the u40 dose by 2.5 and that would produce the correct u100 dose. Currently here 2 x daily dose is 8.8 which comes out to u100 of 22. But I digress.

My vet is recommending we go to Lantus and that will cost over $100 for a 10 ml vial and I've been paying $40 for the vetsulin. I will do what is necessary for Tahoe, but it sure will hurt our budget. We have several indoor-only cats and don't scrimp on their vet-care.

So I've got some questions. Generally speaking, is less insulin used when using the Lantus? That would help to mitigate the cost. I've also seen mention of NPH (Neutral Protamine Hagedorn) on the web. Anyone using that?

I'm open to your suggestions. BTW, I'm located in the Little Rock area.
