I think it was Robert Deniro who said that Bogart wasn't a good actor. He seemed alright in the movies that I saw him but maybe I missed something. I wasn't impressed with Gary Cooper either until I realized that his genius at acting was in the expression on his face that fit the situation he was acting in.

I have never really researched Bogart, but I have always liked his movies. He, too in my opinion was an actor that portrayed his emotions through his facial expressions more than his acting ability. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre is a perfect example. His free-fall into a seeming delirious madness because of his paranoia with the thought he was being robbed of his gold, to me, was classic. I could almost imagine the feelings he experienced simply by his expressions on his face.

Really? Never heard that. They both seem to always be on every top actor list out there.

Like watching him revealing Capt. Queeg's paranoia on the witness stand in "The Caine Mutiny".

That's a good scene, but the one in that movie that really gets me is where he gets back in the boat after pulling it through the water and has the leeches on him. They get the leeches off with salt and he mentions how repulsed he is by them.

Then he realizes that he has to get back in the water.

I think Bogart was a tremendous actor. His inner turmoil in Casablanca; his downward spiral in the Caine Mutiny and Treasure - wonderful stuff.

IMO, The Caine Mutiny was Bogart's best performance. That witness stand scene was truly classic...lol. It's one of my favorite movies of all-time. He was great in Casablanca and African Queen too.

I think Humphrey Bogart was a very good actor.

Agree with the facial expressions. He was awesome and was in some of the best classic movies ever. I am a huge fan.
