Not that this should surprise anyone, but Forbes has discovered that Johnny Depp was the most overpaid actor in Hollywood this year. Not only is he sitting not so pretty at number one, but no one else on the list even comes close to the Mortdecai star, which certainly doesn’t reflect very well on him.
He was very good in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?" and of course, "Edward Scissorhands." He certainly hasn't made the best choices in film roles during the past few years.
Ben Stiller lays a goose egg every film he does, as do Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler, Nicholas Cage, Eddy Murphy. Tom Hanks star is setting, Harrison Ford is finished even with a ridiculous Star Wars for him to cling to, many stars of ten years ago have just about wrapped it up. You have to admire guys who knew their career was over and just retired. Steve Martin for one.
While I can certainly admit Depp hasn't had many good films lately, I like a lot of movies he's in. He's just a "different" individual, and I like that he plays rather "odd" characters. Sweeney Todd was very good (in my opinion). All the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies I rather enjoy as well. I enjoy "odd" characters he plays, so that's why I enjoy him.
Someone mentioned Adam Sandler as well. His earlier films (Happy Gilmore, The Waterboy, Big Daddy, Wedding Singer, Billy Madison) were great movies. And Grown Ups (1&2) were even decent. But his newer movies have just fallen off (Jack & Jill was just plain terrible).
Depp has had some great and interesting roles and has real acting chops. I liked him especially in Edward Scissorhands, Fear and Loathing, The Rum Diary (Very underrated film) and Secret Window.
And yet he's getting Oscar rumblings for his role in "Black Mass". He's had good movies in his career. Most actors have a mix of good & bad, this is nothing new. Yet some want him to retire? Give me a break.
I've never been a fan of his Burton films. But when he's realistic in the role I like him a lot. "Donnie Brasco" is one of my favorites.
