David Crosby has no time for Ted Nugent whining that he hasn’t been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame because of his conservative politics.
After the Trump-supporting rocker told a radio station that he thinks he’s been excluded from the Hall because of his outspoken support for the National Rifle Association, Crosby offered a different explanation, the Daily News reported.
I am not a fan of Nugent or his politics, but it is political.
How can talent be the issue? Some of the most mediocre musicians in history are in the rock 'n' roll Hall of Fame. Is Journey really more talented than Ted Nugent? Is Heart? Is Steve Miller? Is Chicago? Is Green Day? Is Hall and Oates? Is Abba? Heck, how about Crosby himself, who hasn't written a good song in 47 years? This is a long list of mediocrity, enshrined in some bogus hall that is supposed to celebrate innovation and influence in rock music.
I wouldn't enshrine Nugent in anything either, but his resume at least holds up to any of those named above. He has a 50-year career; his first group had one of the more memorable psychedelic hits of the 60's, he was one of the trailblazers of the Detroit rock scene (which was a major scene), he had five big platinum albums in the 1970's as a solo act, he still gets plenty of airplay on classic rock stations. He is exactly the kind of mediocre, 1970's dinosaur that epitomizes rock music to the Hall of Fame. It is pretty hard to say Heart or Journey were any more talented; however, talent is one criteria that the Hall does not consider when inducting acts. It is all based on sales, friendship with Rolling Stone magazine, and Jann Wenner's hopelessly stodgy, out-of-touch-since-1971 tastes.
As for it being "political", I don't mean it is a vast left-wing conspiracy. I mean Nugent's public remarks have most likely offended Wenner, who calls the shots at the Hall. So that's it, Nugent is out. Wenner is famously very sensitive.
I can only come up with Cat Scratch Fever, Little Miss Dangerous, and Fred Bear. The last one I know because they play it non-stop every November - the start of regular firearm deer hunting season.
And I grew up in Michigan during Ted Nugent's supposed "Golden Era".
Two and a half mediocre songs don't get you into any Hall of Fame.

Perhaps not more talented, but they've sold more records. Someone else called it fame that determines HOF eligibility, but I think popularity would be a better word.
