I dunno, have you owned an expensive electronic gadget before? Most people choose some kind of rubber/plastic case. On the low end you can pick silicon, on the high end you can get an Otterbox, depending on how much bulk vs "still fits in my coat pocket" you need.

I don't leave my Galaxy on my hip when I go play hockey, but maybe you do. I had an ex that used to pull her phone off her belt and throw it like a hand grenade at the sofa. I dont feel the manufacturer's design is defective or deficient in any way. Most people with cracked screens or broken/dark displays did it themselves with their own two hands, in my opinion.

I've dropped it on my porcelain tile floor while standing up a few times. It bounced once or twice and nothing broke. I also remember dropping it on the driveway once. I have a cheap TPU flexible plastic case on it.

I dropped mine in Walmart. The back came off and the battery fell out. LOL. It still works. It turns off and on by itself randomly but it was doing that before I dropped it.
