Only if you turn off location services--and then lose a core functionality of your device.

No location services, or App crap at all in my phone, but plenty of core functionality since I use it for it's primary function ... phone calls!
My laptop takes care of internet needs.

My phone's primary function hasn't been a phone in quite some time.

There probably wouldn't be an actual human being spying on you at all. Recently, Authorities used location services to pinpoint all smartphones in use *near* a political demonstration in the Ukraine. Each person received a text message saying that their name has been registered as a participant in the demonstration for possible for future arrest. See how that works?

Even if you weren't part of the protests but say, hanging out in your apartment in the area--you got the message.

Ah, well hang onto it while you can. I think non-smartphones without GPS will likely be phased out in the near future.

Maybe, but I doubt it since there are new models with anti-government features released all the time. That's ok because this one works fine, and I have another brand NEW in a box if this one dies.

It's all about redundancy and knowing how to achieve it!

If you honestly believe that the iPhone is immune, you are kidding yourself. I don't know how it could be done, but if the government really wanted to they could mandate cell phone carriers install certain hardware or internal applications to allow monitoring/tracking.
