I have 743.41 Mb of apps that I have added to the ones that came pre-installed on the phone. It's a cheap phone with 1.79 Gb internal storage and 8 Mb card.
  1. 74.960 Waze (traffic)
  2. 68.970 The CW (Tv shows)
  3. 64.930 The Weather Channel
  4. 57.660 Zillow (real estate)
  5. 55.440 WFMZ (local TV news)
  6. 51.240 Morning Call (local newspaper)
  7. 47.390 POLARIS Office Viewer 5
  8. 42.160 Discover Credit Card
  9. 40.850 Time Play
  10. 40.200 TiVo
  11. 38.150 Wikipedia
  12. 36.550 Walmart
  13. 33.480 CamScanner
  14. 30.200 Pandora
  15. 16.220 Wifi Analyzer
  16. 15.980 Panera
  17. 10.690 OCR Plug In for Cam Scanner
  18. 8.430 Google Voice
  19. 3.760 Device Manager
  20. 3.090 My GPS Coordinates
  21. 2.860 Sound Search for Google
  22. 0.104 Wifi Connecter Library
  23. 0.096 Hangout Dialer

I am just curious what people who buy expensive phones install for apps. Do you just download more media apps, and more stores, or is there something I am missing? How do you go from less than 1 Gb to 8 Gb? Are there apps that require hundreds of megabytes?

In my opinion, you need to look at your usage of the apps you have downloaded. Do you use them all on a regular basis ? Delete the applications that are infrequently used. For instance, I hardly see the need to download a Wikipedia application when you can access the internet site directly through the phone browser.

Everybody is different. Ain't life grand? I have over 130 apps downloaded on my flagship phone and it runs as good as the day I turned it on. This is why I buy flagship phones. I don't want to have to worry about how many apps I have, how much space I have, can I download this or that and will it run OK?
Nope. Been there, won't do that again. My phone takes everything I can throw at it and replies: "Is that all you got?"

That is precisely what I do now. I used to have other networks or Netflix and I used to have other stores. If it gets crowded I could delete Wikipedia or something.

These are the only apps that are not built in that I consider essential and they only add up to 150 Mb or less.
64.930 The Weather Channel

30.200 Pandora

8.430 Google Voice
3.090 My GPS Coordinates
0.096 Hangout Dialer

There are a lot of built in apps like Google Chrome, Calendar, Youtube, Phone, that I use all the time.

My question is for people that have gigabytes of data on a premium phone, are there some apps that take hundreds of megabytes that they find wonderful, or do they just collect multiple stores and media outlets.

If you use your phone's camera regularly, photos will eat up that memory quickly. One way to help that is to download Dropbox and link it to your Dropbox account, then delete the photos from your phone.

So will texting eat up space, if you keep the messages. (and who deletes texts?!)

Here are some downloaded apps I use regularly (besides the built in apps, like mail, phone, calendar, notes, etc.):

Waze.
Accuweather.
Several local news sites.
My security system app.
My car start app.
Fitbit app.
Another exercise app.
Twitter.
Cartwheel App.
Grocery store card app.
Snapchat.
Games.
Chrome.

Paco, the only apps that use 100's of MB's are games.

PeachSalsa: Texting takes very little space. I mean VERY little, even with 1,000's of texts. And I do know people who delete them. I know 2 people that keep NO texts at all.

Hey PacoMartin!

Well, to be clear, I never started at 1gb. I think my usage won't be the same as everyone else's, but I wouldn't be surprised if I represent some amount of the population.

2GB - Music: I have around 2gb of Music. This equates to around 200-250 songs (most of my songs are a high bitrate).
1-2GB - Movies: I generally keep a movie or two on my phone
2GB - Games: I have several games that take around 400-500mb.
2-6GB - Development Stuff: I have a number of different apps and tests with gigabytes worth of 3d models, textures and so forth. This generally starts hogging data.
400-500MB - Photos: This is probably a much higher number for some people. I generally save pictures I find funny or cute or whatever and I forget to ever delete them. So I end up accruing like 500 images in my downloads folder, a few hundred photos taken.
2GB - App Data: Apps such as Messenger, Facebook, WhatsApp, Kik, etc. will store a surprising amount of Data on your phone. Generally, if I go through Facebook a few times a week, I'll end up getting several hundred MB of data downloaded easily. Messenger normally gets up to about 100mb.

You can see here, we can easily get up to around:
10.5GB of Data

You can see how all this stuff can add together. There's people with twice as many photos as me and 4x the amount of songs.

On my phone at this second, I have used 18GB of space (of my available 32GB)

Me. I have one I keep because it has a picture I haven't figured out how to add to the gallery. I know, I know, a PC guy that can't figure it out. What can I say? I find Android to be a pita. And the texts I get are nothing I need to keep.

Mostly, but not absolutely ...

CoPilot GPS has offline maps, and the US map is a 2.14 GB download.
