Ever since the last upgrade, when I go to erase my junk mail, my inbox deletes instead. I have lost a lot of important stuff. Sometimes I can find it in the trash, and sometimes not.

Apparently, no one has come up with a work around for this.

I agree that the Mac Community internet site is a much better source of information for the OP's issue as there are already 2 people who commented on the same issue. While an answer hasn't yet been provided, Apple is usually very good in coming up with solutions fairly quickly. Hopefully there is a simple answer/solution that will be provided shortly.

I have an iPhone and my email issues have only been due to the app provider, not my phone. Your iPhone does not have an email program

When I’ve had an email issue, I’ve deleted the app/ program and reinstalled it. Works every time. Done it maybe less than once a year
