I can't even remember the last time I saw someone hold a phone up to their head. Is this just a NYC thing? Sorry to be that person but I notice it's now common for a lot of people to simply have their phone on blast without headphones wither it's for FaceTime or music, whatever. This really started in a big way after the pandemic. Is it still considered rude or do I just need to suck it up?
I don't know about everyone, but my mom, who is 74, has been using her speakerphone on her smart phone for the last 10+ years for every single call, not sure if she was ahead of the curve or a trailblazer!
When I worked in a business office, speaker phone was used for conference calls. Business etiquette recommends to advise the other party that speaker is being used. Why though?? Well let's say sometimes confidential Information is from ones lips to the others ears. Not the entire company!
I detest public cell users that are blasting their conversation...in grocery stores...banks, restaurants, etc. Stop broadcasting.
What calls you receive in your own private space...fine, blast away.
Because cell phones suck at their fundamental function, making it possible to hear and speak clearly. The weird locations of microphone and speaker, driven by form factor, make the actual reproduction of human speech orders of magnitude worse than with a standard traditional handset. If you go to speaker mode you have at least a chance of understanding and being understood.
As mentioned above, the form factor of a cell phone makes it hard to hear and be heard at the same time. Remember how old phone sets were long and curved with one end against your ear and the other end in front of your mouth?
Another reason is people try to multi-task now. They want to be doing something else in addition to their conversation.
I use a bluetooth earbud.
Have for years.
I find holding my phone to my head a really strange way to take or make a call.
I have multiple earbuds so one is always charged and ready to use.
The only time I am EVER on speakerphone is to share a call with my wife or when driving.
Holding a phone when driving should be an immediate ticketing offense.
The minor rudeness you cite is just another glimpse at "It is all about me" culture.

Fairly common.
Sometimes it's fun to screw with them. Start having a really loud semi-vulgar conversation next to them and/or while walking behind them. Sometimes they look embarassed other times not. Never reallly seems to get them off speakerphone in public but hey, at least I have some fun.
I use speakerphone so I don't have to hold the device to my head.
Transmit power isn't very high, but don't want to take chances on having the inside of my head irradiated.
I feel the same.
