Hi to all. Does anyone know of any special, charming mountain towns within driving distance from Charleston? My family owned a cottage in a small NC mountain town that was filled with gossip and small minded people so we sold our place there. Any ideas?

I have always liked Hendersonville and Brevard in NC and Abingdon, VA. All small, quaint mountain towns (hope one of them isn't one you were referring to).

I have to agree with Hendersonville NC, also Waynesville NC. Waynesville is in the mountains and just beautiful. It is a much smaller town than Hendersonville and and has a lovely downtown area. But the advantage to Hendersonville is that you have Asheville and all it's amenities very close by.

Also Blowing Rock, Banner Elk, Flat Rock (more like a part of Hendersonville), Cashiers. But I would pick Highlands.

If you're into the Southern Appalachians, I'd consider Western N.C., N. Georgia, or E. Tennessee.
All are about the same drive-time from the coast; all are about the same as far as topography and culture.

In N. C. I've always liked Lake Lure, and that area. In Ga. there is a town called Helen, which is (supposedly) a recreation of a Bavarian village. Even Tennessee, my least favorite (but that's me you may think otherwise, as we're talking personal preference not facts) has some good areas around Cleveland.

But as far as small-town gossip goes, I live near (but thankfully not in) 'Flatlander Central.'

Every summer our good friends from Illinois ( a couple hundred thousand, or so) invade the area; some even have bought lake front cottages/land that to their utter dismay has now dropped in value like a rock.

Point is, they only register to the locals, like myself, at the register (as in cash register). Otherwise, they are viewed like our famous mosquitos: a seasonal problem. So, local gossip, while a potent factor, is aimed at locals only; unless you or your group run around naked, poach the local fauna, or become a general nusance, even the old biddies (and apologies to any offended, but by any logical classifiction, I would be labled an old fart) won't disect your life or goings-on.

I've always enjoyed taking my family to Brevard, Hendersonville and Asheville. The others that have been mentioned are also fantastic. Nothing like getting away to the mountains in August or July.
Sincerely,
Foster

Talullah Gorge in Ga. is a nice spot for anyone wanting to glimpse something other than the flat monotony of the Coastal Plain.
