From the little I have read, it is tougher to grow grass here than up north. My backyard has a lot of dirt and I would like to grow some grass. Can anyone give me some tips on where to start? I have hopefully attached a picture. This is my first time adding a picture to a post. Thanks!

Looks like you have a pretty small yard,,,,,Have you thought about sod?
I have seen a lot of people use sod with good results.

Pennington's seed for Southern Lawns and a bag of peatmoss to cover the exposed seed...

Take a garden rake, that would be the hard tine one not the springy one, scratch the ground deep, about 1/2" than add seed and cover with peat, water frequently....

Thanks guys! Rick, it is a tiny yard. I am renting, but would like to have nice grass. Up north I had .08 (yes, .08) acres that had a house and a 2 car garage sitting on it, so it will be nice to have a little back yard that I can actually sit in!

Do you know why that grass is gone in that spot? My female dog is killing my yard when she's uses the bathroom.

Kingping, I don't know if the prior tenant had a dog or cat, but the maintenance man told me that a lot of the yard areas are like that.

This is the best answer for a renter otherwise, for an owner it is to sod it and keep it wet.

Sod for a yard that small would be pretty low cost and make life a lot easier.

To lay sod correctly you have to remove the top layer of grass and weeds and have the dirt scuffed up already, so sod is not easier to put down, unless you get someone else to do it for you and most places wouldn't bother with a yard that small, and then it wouldn't be cheaper....

Guessing everyone doesn't have a sod cutter. One of the advantages I have with a landscaper in the family. Believe you can rent them though. A hard rake can even take care of the aeration bit and then you lay the sod. Don't think it would be that hard with a yard that small. Of course, the ease or difficulty of a job always depends upon a person's willingness to do the work and their comfort with the type of work being done.
