Did your wife assume he was being a jerk because of the way he looked? Did she assume he wasn't Hispanic because he didn't have the look?

The point is that assumptions and preconceived notions go both ways.

What have been your experiences in the rest of the state? I have found open minded people all over SC.

Here's the difference -- when you are blonde hair and blue eyed and someone is rude to you -- you don't think it is because they are racist -- just rude.
Sometimes the clerks follow customers around because they earn commission and don't want to risk another clerk snatching you away.

I'm caucasian female and have been followed around in lots of stores. Whatever the reason, they lose me as a customer.
