I have been looking at homes in Charleston for the past couple of years. I currently live in Atlanta and have always wanted to live in Charleston. I am a widow (age 55) and am wondering about how difficult it is to make friends. I am tired of the dating scene in ATL. I want to live in planned community where there are social activities, bunco, swimming, gardening. I volunteer in Atlanta. I love the low country style. I keep returning to I'on, and wonder if there are similar communities I should look at. My daughter currently attends CocC but I am not moving because of her. She will probably end up in NYC. I have lots of married friends in Atl, but am lonely and wonder what single life is like in Charleston? I have met with agents and plan to list house in August. Thanks

You could always take some sort of class at Micheal's. I just started a cake decorating class and have met some really nice people. There are all types of classes there. You could also take some shag dancing lessons to meet people. I think you can take those classes by yourself. I am new to the area, so I don't have any friends here yet, but I have just started to go out and do things like this to meet others in the area.

We have several 55+ communities in the Charleston area that offer planned activities. There are also communities more geared to adults without young children. In the Summerville area, there is Pines at Gahagan, The Elms, Del Webb in Cane Bay and The Ponds to name a few. Also in the whole area there are Meetup Groups you can join. look up Do something, Learn something, Share something, Change something - Meetup. If you don't see something you like, you can form your own group. Even the singles dating site "plentyoffish.com has a group that meets out near Folly Beach periodically. This is a very social area.

Lots of neighborhoods here in Mount Pleasant also have planned social events. and lots of the neighbors do things together. Ion is great and a good choice for you. I would also check out some of the other neighborhoods I mentioned in your other Ion post.

In order to better suggest, what are you looking to spend for a home? I'on will start at about $500,000.00.
