Anyone seen the beach front near the FB county park? I went out last evening... high tide and there was NO PLACE to walk...much of the protective first line of dunes and beach strand are destroyed from Irene erosion.

A couple who had walked down to the park area said it was basically gone....it remains closed.

What happens now? Does the city come rebuild the dunes and reclaim the beach? We're moving to James Island this week and, being Wisconsin natives, don't really know how that works.

Well since my earlier post...

I was at the Folly Pier/beach today and spoke with a FB park staffer.
He said the first 2 walkovers were out, the sewer was destroyed and that the area was not safe...

he also said it might have to be permanently closed...

Just saw an article on P&C that it is closed indefinitely. More than likely the needed repairs will made through out the fall and winter and reopen in the Spring. Until then just visit down by the pier. It's all good!

Sounds like, generally speaking, Charleston was spared the worst of Irene, so that's good. My sister-in-law lives in Virginia and has a huge mess. We are just glad she's OK, but she's sideways about this because the house was recently completed. They've only been living there a few months. My husband has already seen Hurricane Katia building in the Atlantic. Hopefully she won't make it to Charleston either. *fingers crossed*

You guys need to do some research about the south end of Folly island.

Years ago there was a island almost connected to the south end of folly called Bird Key,,,,thats where they took all the sand from to add to the north end of the island. (Thats just about gone now)
I wish I still had the pictures.

The park was doomed before it was built!

Our Charleston County Parks and Rec Comm doesn't have the smartest people working for them...........They have NOT built a new public boating ramp in Charleston county in over 40 years.................

Went walking on the Isle of Palm Beach -- 8ith street to Breech Inlet....seems to me there has been quite a beach washed away -- a step up to get back to the walkway to the road.........We weren't even in the main scheme of things....I know we were lucky BUT....lets you know who is in charge...Mother Nature.
