We just visited Charleston and stayed with friends at their home. We have always been intrigued with the Isle of Palms and thought perhaps of staying there in the future. We took a little tour of the island, turned right after the bridge and ate at a local restaurant called Huck's. This area looked and had the feel of being very crowded. My question is; this is what to be expected of staying on the Isle of Palms, or are there areas that are less crowded? I know that this is the height of vacation season and this might be the norm for the whole island. We have heard of the area called the Wild Dunes but this seems to be very expensive. Just wondering about the island and what it may offer other than what we experienced. Thanks.

This could possibly be more easily answered in the general South Carolina forum... But there are no doubt people from this area who could answer your questions! That's an area I've wanted to visit for some time. Have done Charleston several times & loved it, but want to explore more of that region.

We have a place at Wild Dunes. I'm partial to that area.

Post this on the Charleston board where Isle of Palms is.

And yes, there are a variety of great rentals within Wild Dunes on IOP.

Isle of Palms gets pretty busy during the summer. If you are looking for a more relaxed feel look for rentals on Sullivan's Island.

The Isle of Palms (as known as IOP and formally "Long Island") transforms from a sleepy beach side residence to a vacation destination during the warmer months of the year. Around 3 or 4,000 full time residents during the "colder" months and around 50,000 occupants during the busiest months. Most beach towns have similar jumps and as with anything, the more expensive... the more private the experience.Moderator cut: advertising, read the tos
