Hi. I'm a recent transplant who just bought a fixer upper in West Ashley. I've already got a decent size pile of general debris built up. Is there a landfill or recycling drop off location anywhere near West Ashley? How can I find out what materials are acceptable to dispose where? I suppose another option might be to rent a dumpster, but I have a truck so bringing it somewhere wouldn't be a big problem.
Thanks.

You're in luck because of Bees Ferry. If you have anything reusable, take it to Habit for Humanity downtown (north of crosstown / on Meeting Street).
What neighborhood, btw? We're doing the same thing in Northbridge Terrace.
We're in Olde Town Acres. It's a 50's vintage house that has been untouched except for all the amateur plumbing and electrical changes. I've got my work cut out for me!
Cool stuff. Ours is a late '50s vintage house that has been touched way too much, but the plumbing and electrical is good. We're redoing two bathrooms to undo bad early 2000s remodel work and get them looking closer to they way it originally did, but the rest of the house is going much more upscale and midcentury/modern. I think most of the house was reworked around 2003, but it was done without the aid of a designer or someone who had much of an idea of how they wanted everything to come out. As it was when we moved in, the place was very... blah.
Anyway since you're DIYing and have the same garbage crew we have...
- If you put a "Reasonable" amount of debris by the street every week or two they'll take it (Wednesdays for us). A front end loader comes by late in the afternoon. Don't abuse this or they'll leave it there. edit: don't mix it in with lawn debris because a separate truck comes for that and if it's mixed nobody will take it.
- If you have a lot of stuff you want to get rid of quickly, you can get to the Bees Ferry landfill in 15 minutes or so. No clue what they charge; I've never dropped stuff off there.
- Whatever can be reused I'd recommend donating to Habitat. It's free, and can be a MASSIVE tax writeoff. Unless you're talking about cool vintage accessories such as a bathroom fan or heater, intercom, medicine cabinet or things like that. Those I'll take
Charleston County residents get free dumping at Bees up to some fairly decent volume. Don't know the limit.
