Ok so we all know about Petco and Petsmart. The problem is that the Petco near me (Remount) is a little ghetto and the Petsmart in Summerville tends to intimidate Ronin.
Anyway here's the deal.
I was convinced that beastie (Ronin) didn't like toys. He had no interest in anything I gave him. He might chew on it briefly and the lose interest or sniff at it and turn his head. A friend came over to paint my garage because, and I'm not making this up, I can't stand painting and she loves it. She opened a new pack of paint rollers and he grabbed one and next thing I knew, I was throwing it across the room and he was bringing it back to me all excited lab like. That lasted until he got tired of fetch and decided to play "tear the fluff off the paint roller." I didn't want to see the paint roller all over the floor or in his poop or spend the next week googling what paint rollers are made of while deciding whether or not I needed to call the vet so I took it from him. I got him a bag of tennis balls and his interest in that lasted about as my interest in that Honey Boo Boo show (when someone told me that it beat the RNC in ratings one night, I said "what the hell is Honey Boo Boo?").
Another friend suggested that I should get a hunting dog training toy since he's half Lab half spaniel (both hunting breeds) and he likes to (try to) chase small animals (squirrels, rabbits, rooster that I'm going to let him kill the next time we see it, cat that sleeps on the front lawn sometimes, little dogs that bark in his face etc).
I've taken him to Petsmart to let him choose a toy but there are always a lot of people when we go and there are other dogs and some kid always runs up and wants to pet him (I can't blame the kids he's freakin adorable) and he tends to tuck his tail and get intimidated. He doesn't pee all over the store or anything but he isn't going to grab a toy off the rack either.
So my question is:
Are there any smaller, less crowded, pet supply stores in the North Area where I can take him to find a toy he might like? I don't want to go get something and bring it home and have him turn up his nose at it. I'd like to bring him to the store and have him be able to yea or nay it then and there. Maybe something that looks and or smells lifelike to him?
I hat the idea of him not having anything to play with all day. He just kind of lays around or waits for me to give him pets and scratches. He WILL chase stuff he's interested in, he just hasn't been interested in anything I WANT him to chase (I don't want him chasing paint rollers and flea ridden rodents).
Try "All is Well" pet supply. They have locations in Summerville, Mt. P., West Ashley, and on James Island.
They are pricier than the standard pet stores, but maybe you'll find what you are looking for.
There is a really neat hardware store on 17N in Awendaw near the SeeWee Post area that you can take your dogs into.. in your shopping cart if you want. They have tons of toys, and pet supplies and we didn't have to compete with other dogs. It was great. In fact, I learned of it from someone here online.

Well the problem with that is that returning to an online retailer is more of a pain than returning in person if he doesn't like it.
I tried All is Well and Doolittles yesterday. No joy.
Will give tractor supply a shot one of these days.

Am I correct in thinking he's home alone all day?
A lot of people swear by the Kong toys that you fill up with peanut butter that keeps them occupied for hours.
We had the best luck with the hard plastic balls (QVC sold) that dispense treats when the dogs nose-roll them around the floor and it drops out "treats" (Our cocker turned her nose up at her bowl of crunchies, but loved spending hours nose-rolling this ball around the floor eating the same crunchies she ignored in her bowl!)
The original one we ordered had a tape recorder that you could program your own taped voice message into when they rolled it around the floor.. "Good girl, I miss you" and they got to hear your own voice each time they rolled it.
You don't find these specialty toys in most stores unfortunately, for some reason. But the Kong toys are pretty normally available.
