No, you dont love this city if you want that type of "compromise".
I just LOL. If the many tropical and ancient ports can successfully operate cruise terminals and they are not harming the environment, then Charleston shouldn't be exempt. I'm pretty sure there are other port cities out there that have much more to lose environmentally and are doing perfectly fine with it being a port-of-call. Grow up and get with reality.
My ancestors built a very famous plantation there, my Mom was born and raised on the battery. I visit regularly, and considering a move to the Pitt St. neighborhood of old Mt Pleasant upon retiring.
This is why I am adamant about it's historical preservation. Lots of people don't agree, but its very personal to me. Its very sad for me to see the insidious genericization process and history bulldozed over for the stuff that is proliferating, currently. Growth for the sake of growth is what cancer does. The current state of hyper-over development in the Charleston area is a cancer.

I'm not sure it will stop by the time you get here, so might want to find somewhere else to go.
Well we know why he aligns himself with the 'Preservation League'. Just another NIMBY person. I've yet to talk to a single person about this that doesn't support expanding the cruise industry in Charleston... yet the few want to continue to rule the many.
Does the harbor even have enough depth to accommodate BIG ships around the clock, both freight and cruiselines? I do see the Emerald Princess is coming in November. That ship is huge. I'm not some smarty pants (apparently) when it comes to how much water a ship needs to move but I know the harbor is not that deep.
Lots of larger ships have berthed here including the QE2.
I will say, it seems odd to have the terminal SMACK in the heart of the peninsula. Why not up towards the old Naval Base & include the terminal as part of the rehab project?
Why would anyone want a cruise terminal at the old Naval Base? Downtown right next to the market and King Street is the perfect place. As for other ports, who cares if their ports are not downtown, that's what makes Charleston unique. Ever been to Venice or Naples, both in the middle the city, not out in some industrial area. I don't think people will feel safe at the Naval Base.
This little group of people who want to move it away from their homes are mostly folks who have just moved here, while the port has been here for years. It's always the come heres that want to keep things the way they are for 'themselves'. I've lived here 70 years and progress 'will' come.

May I suggest Columbia?
Not to be rude here but you're a recent transplant and this person has a long history in this place you now call home. To suggest he should move somewhere else????? With all due respect, he and his were here long before you. I suggest you remember that. We here in the South respect our old families and the ones that our town, communities, and roads are named after.
