I have my friend from NY coming to visit me and want to experience Southern home cooking. I have made up menu for dinner but can't decide what to make for desert. What would you make at home as a typical, classic Southern desert? Do you have any recipe to share?

Red Velvet Cake, Chess pie, banana pudding (variations of this idea -- banana pudding cheesecake for example).

The others mentioned above are also great ideas.

Strawberry shortcake for sure if they are coming during the local berry season (right around the corner). You can even make a nice pound cake to go with this and just spoon your berries & syrup right over the top (macerate the berries with sugar & a pinch of salt).

Pecan Pie is always a nice option and doesn't take up space in your refrigerator (I like a tiny bit of bourbon in mine sometimes).

Banana Pudding...and I bet they never had one fresh while it's still warm. Make a smallish one as they typically don't hold well in the fridge.

Fresh peach cobbler if the local peaches are coming off.

If you're adventurous, you could tackle a Southern Chocolate Torte (12-layer cake). Micro thin cake layers separated by tiny layers of chocolate icing. One of the finer southern cakes around.

Love the strawberry shortcake idea, but try it with sweet biscuits instead of pound cake.

Thank you y'all for suggestions! I think I will go with strawberry shortcake because I've seen strawberry on sale everywhere!

I would suggest heading my post above...but of course you can make your own decisions.

I rarely, very rarely, get ok strawberries in a grocery. They are hardly ever sweet...and never taste like a local berry.

I scoff at them every time my wife wants to get some.

So, where do you get your "local berry"?
