We recently moved to a new home and inherited a banana tree that's pretty much just a stumpy brown stalk right now.

I'm really tempted to remove it, but I'd hate to do that if there's still a chance it will come back....

Anyone have any advice here? About when do they start to come back to life from your experience?

Call the Clemson University Cooperative Extension and ask them. They know all about plants and trees in SC:

Chop the stalk down to a few inches and just leave it. Chances are it'll be back. They die back every winter.

Thanks! I have one also and was wondering if I should get rid of it. I am going to cut mine back.

The ice storm hit my gardenias, oleander, pineapple guava and tea olive REALLY bad. I'm a little worried. It's early yet though and I need to be more patient. They all could come back............in their own sweet time. Apparently the same is true for the banana tree....
