Hello all. My wife and I are moving to Charleston for the fall school year from PA. I just got a job at a private school there, my wife is a paralegal and will be seeking employment (she is nationally certified and has experience in social security disability and personal injury law).
Here are our answers to the sticky questions:
1. Budget 1000-1200
2. House/Condo/Townhome? We like houses but are flexible on this. Looking for 2BR/1B. Square footage more important than numbers of rooms.
3. Employment Status(commute/work from home). I will be commuting to Porter-Gaud. Not wanted a long commute (over 20 minutes)
4. Children(public school vs. private) -- all grown
5. Suburban, Coastal or Urban lifestyle preference or a mix of them together (or even Rural). We like a mix. Love the beach, nature, but can currently walk to library, coffee houses, etc. which we enjoy.
6. Amenities preferred or must-haves. Pool would be nice, though not a must-have.
7. Preferable demographics of desired neighborhood -- prefer cosmopolitan attitudes, safety.
We're pretty open-minded socially and culturally, if that helps.
Finding the long-distance apartment search difficult, so we're looking for advice from those already there.
Sorry no one's answered this yet... The South Windermere area would be ideal for what you are looking for but I don't think you can find much there for under $1200. Something might come up though. Other areas of close in West Ashley might work too.
Next I would think James Island around Cross Creek area.
Both of these would be very close to Porter Gaud and S Windermere is walkable to a great shopping center with Earth Fare, a bakery, library, and other interesting shops to walk to.
Craigslist would be the way to search for something there. Use the maps function and see what's close to Porter Gaud.
James Island is also really close to Porter-Gaud. It's a great school too- I have several friends with children enrolled there. Hope you have a smooth transition to the area!
Thanks for the welcome. We're looking forward to Charleston!
