You should google California/South Carolina comparisions. But I can tell you everything is likely cheaper here, and by a good bit. At the same time though, you'll be making less, so there will be less to tax.
Taxes here are less than they are in CA. You'll have to check to compare exact rates, but your hard-earned money will go a longer ways down here than in CA, even though you will earn less.
if you retire in CA they tax your retirement plus dividends. Gas tax is higher, and property tax is higher in Cali. Income tax I believe is also higher in CA. Rents are high and housing is pretty high in CA as well. They call it the Sunshine tax. Sales tax i think is higher in Cali as well. The weather is wonderful in CA and not as much humidity and the wages may be higher in Cali but that is based on the cost of living for the area. You can move to outlying areas in Cali where housing is cheaper but your commute may be longer. Not sure about medical quality in SC but in Cali there is many very good well renowned hospitals. Every ones situation is different I wish you luck in choosing your spot PS: If I lived in Santa Barbara I would never move-it is such a beautiful area I wish I could afford to live there you would be hard pressed to find a nicer area-you are so lucky to live there!
Florida gives you the humidity exemption on the sunshine tax so that its cheaper to live there.
