Our local Symphony Orchestra opened their season last Friday with the 9/11 Memorial Concert. This is a 40-piece Band with all the Instruments. The string section was made up of a dozen violins, cellos, and big bass fiddles. The entire catalog of brass instruments was represented, as were all the percussion tools including timpani.
The Concert was presented at the Summerville Baptist Church, a building with excellent acoustics. The Orchestra is led by the new Maestro Milewski, an energetic Conductor and imaginative Music Director.
Friday's Memorial Program started with the Presentation of the Colors and the National Anthem. I'm pleased to say that nobody in the audience chose to sit or kneel or squat for this moving performance. It was thrilling to hear this large orchestra play our anthem -- the audience was singing along !!!
There followed a few Sousa Marches (one of them sounded suspiciously like the old Monty Python theme). Then there was a wonderful arrangement called American Salute starting with some big band classics, segueing neatly into Elvis, and then the Beatles and then into some of the more modern American songs.
The show closer was the Armed Forces theme songs. As each of the branch's songs were played, Veterans in the audience stood up and received the Ovation from their friends and neighbors.
As Remembrance Concerts go......this one will stay with me for a long while.
