I hope you all came through the hurricane safely and with no damage. As we get back into the swing of things, I'm turning my mind back to my house hunt and could use some insight.
We moved to Charleston in February and have been living in a condo complex just off the JI connector. We really like the area as it is convenient to downtown (where I work) and to West Ashley (where the Hubby) works. We are looking to buy a house in the coming months and I would love some advice regarding safety, etc. We want to stay in james Island or West Ashley (inside I-526).
West Ashley Neighborhoods we are considering:
Parkwood Estates
West Oak Forest (before Sycamore, roughly)
Areas off of Wappoo (Charleston side)
James Island Neighborhoods:
Area across from the Publix on Folly Road (opposite side of Central Park Road)
Area off Camp Road and Folly (behind the Chick-Fil-A) - accessible via Riverland Drive
Area behind Harborview Elementary
Area off of Riverland Drive between Maybank and Central Park
I'm not very good with neighborhood names. Haha. Basically our budget is between $250-$275k. We don't want new construction and don't mind a fixer upper. Priorities are not getting stuck is crazy traffic which I know is difficult for the West Ashley locations. The other consideration is flood insurance--we don't want required insurance because of the cost. That pretty much took Air Harbor off the list. We haveno kids but that is a future consideration.
Any thoughts on these locations would be appreciated.
You're focusing on some decent neighborhoods and there are more to consider especially as you don't mind a fixer upper. Depending on what size house you're looking for and other specifics, you might look at the Heathwood/Old Towne Acres/Lenevar area too just for starters. There's quite a bit more to consider and I'm sending you a message.
I was over on the West Ashley side yesterday, after the Storm. There's a little subdivision called Providence Commons just off of McConnell. 20-year old homes, I think Eastwood built them. Some of the homes back there feature "Lakeside" locations. Well, yesterday those homes were Lakeside, Lakefront and Lakerear. Lots of water on that side of the Ashley.
If you like sand bags......that's an area you should look into.
